Some Information on our Coaches
Head Coach Mr. David Henley Head Coach David Henley begins his 12 th season at the helm of the Holmes Bulldogs basketball program. Coach Henley came to Holmes in October of 1997, where he was an assistant coach at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Coach Henley got his start in basketball early. He "grew up in the gym" at Carlisle County High School where his father Jim, was a 20-year coach on the freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels. In 1975, the elder Coach Henley led the Comets to the First Region Championship and to the Sweet 16 in Louisville's Freedom Hall, where they fell to eventual state runner-up Lexington Henry Clay.
Henley played high school basketball for Hall of Fame Coach Craynor Slone at Carlisle County. In 1983, the Comets won 40 games and lost only 4. The school was featured on the front page of USA Today, highlighting the great Comet basketball tradition and its success, despite having only 250 students. Henley was a member of the All-Tournament Team at the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Tournament in Fairdale in 1982. In that tournament the Comets fell to quite possibly the greatest high school basketball team of all-time, Baltimore Dunbar, which featured three first round (NBA) draft choices - Reggie Williams, the late Reggie Lewis, and Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues - in the championship game.
In that same season, Carlisle County made a run to the Sweet 16 championship game at Rupp Arena. The Comets lost one of the greatest championship games in tournament history 35-33 to Lexington Henry Clay in three overtimes. Henley was a member of the First Region Coaches All-Region team and an honorable mention All-State player at Carlisle County.
After high school, Henley attended Southeastern Illinois Junior College where he received a baseball and basketball scholarship. A full-time starter for the hoop squad at SIC, Henley averaged 11 points for the 23-10 Falcons. After junior college, Coach Henley went on to play baseball at Southern Illinois University. As a pitcher, Henley was one of the starting pitchers for the 1986 Missouri Valley Conference champions.
After graduating with a degree in History Education, Henley moved to Kissimmee, Florida where he was the head Freshman coach and varsity assistant for the Osceola Kowboys, a perennial powerhouse in the state. Coach Henley was also an assistant coach for Team Florida's AAU 19 and under national runner-up team which was led by National Player of the Year, Clifford Rozier.
From there Coach Henley spent 5 years as an assistant at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. During his time in Murray, the Racers won 4 Ohio Valley Conference Championships and played in three NCAA Tournaments. As a Racer assistant, Henley had the privilege of coaching All-American "Popeye" Jones who went on to play for 8 years in the NBA and Marcus Brown, who played 2 years in the NBA. From there Coach Henley moved to Duquesne University for two years. On the team at the time was standout Mike James, a member of the Detroit Pistons world championship team in 2004.
In September of '97 Coach Henley made the move to Covington to take over the reigns of the tradition-rich Holmes Bulldogs. Since coming to Holmes, the Dogs have recorded 221 wins and 106 losses. The Dogs won the 9th Region Championship in 2005, 2007, 2008 and the NKAC Division I Championship in 2006 and 2008. During his time at Holmes, Coach Henley has received numerous awards. Included are the NKAC Coach of the Year in 1999, 2000, and 2005, 2007, and 2008. KABC 9th Region coach of the year in 2005, 2008 and Insight Cable, and Greater Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame Coach of the Year in 2005, 2007 and 2008. The Bulldogs have won four District Championships under Coach Henley as well, along with a 9th region runner-up title in 2000. The Bulldogs have also won the "Bob Miller Sportsmanship Award" on three different occasions under Coach Henley.
Coach Henley is married to the former Cindy Hubbard from Pikeville. Ms. Henley is currently a business teacher at Walton Verona Junior High School. The couple has one son, Jordan Allan, who is six years old.

Assistant Coach John Wimzie A true Northern Kentucky Sports Legend and Northern Kentucky Hall of Fame member, Coach John "Bud" Wimzie begins his 12th season as assistant coach at his alma mater. Over the past eleven seasons, Coach Wimzie has been an integral part of continuing the winning tradition in Holmes Basketball.
Before stepping in to the position of assistant coach, Coach Wimzie helped build the Bulldog basketball program into one of the best in Kentucky as a great player. He is best remembered as an All-District, All-Region, and All-State performer in the 1978 basketball season, while playing for another Hall of Famer, Coach Reynolds Flynn. That year, the Bulldogs went 34-2, won the 9th region championship and advanced to the finals of the Sweet 16 Boys State Championship game in Freedom Hall in Louisville. In that game, the Bulldogs lost a heart-breaker to Shelby County in overtime - including a very controversial "goal-tending" non call - which led to the Bulldogs defeat. Coach Wimzie was also a starter on the 1976 and 1977 9th Region Championship Bulldog teams.
After high school, Coach Wimzie continued his playing career at Central Wyoming Junior College for one year. He then attended Cincinnati State College the following season and played for another legend, John Hurley.
Also a member of the Bulldog Football coaching staff, Coach Wimzie and his wife Crystal have two children, Cameron (a member of the 1999 Bulldogs) and Ashley. In July, Coach Wimzie and Crystal also became the proud grandparents of Ahmiayah Lanae Wimzie. |
